Commercial Banking (CB) provides a full range of services including lending, treasury services, investment banking, commercial card and asset management products to meet its clients’ domestic and international financial needs. CB’s 1,800 bankers serve approximately 18,000 clients nationally, including corporations, municipalities, financial institutions and not-for-profit entities, with annual revenue generally ranging from $20 million to $2 billion, and nearly 36,000 real estate clients, owners and investors. Team overview

CB Core Strategy team functions as an internal consulting and corporate development group partnering with senior management across CB to deliver on the most important business strategies. Projects are typically staffed by small, high performing teams of 2-4 individuals and include extensive collaboration with partners throughout the lines of business and functional areas. CB Core Strategy reports through the Head of CB Strategy, a CB Operating Committee member, leading Strategy as an independent functional area within CB.

Projects managed by CB Strategy include:

  • Assessing new market opportunities from preliminary evaluation and sizing to go-to-market strategy

  • Performing competitive and market sizing analyses, including profiling competitors’ offerings / strategies and identifying factors driving growth or change in industry structure

  • Evaluating client segmentation and sales models

  • Identifying opportunities to improve business efficiency and/or client experience

  • Exploring FinTech landscape to identify and execute new partnership opportunities

  • Identifying solutions for market needs and/or changes in the landscape

  • Creating internal Operating Committee-level and external shareholder-level presentations for CB CEO

Role overview

Executive Directors on CB Core Strategy are instrumental to driving projects forward, responsible for overall project execution, review of analyses completed by junior team members, and development of comprehensive presentations related to strategic planning, business improvement and optimization and other internal consulting initiatives.

Key responsibilities

  • Advise and influence senior leaders on key business decisions, major change initiatives and strategic agenda

  • Independently structure and oversee the execution of in-depth qualitative and quantitative analyses

  • Review synthesized findings and recommendations, and oversee creation of senior management documents to present recommendations

  • Support the creation of execution plans for successful transition to business management function

  • Establish advisory relationships with key internal stakeholders and partner with strategy teams across the JPMC on firmwide initiatives

  • Monitor industry trends and analyze internal performance to provide insightful intelligence that facilitates and drives business strategy

  • Manage the creation of internal and external strategic presentations / executive communication materials for CB CEO to articulate strategic direction and execution

  • Recruit, manage and develop junior resources to maximize performance and potential

  • 8+ years of experience at a top-tier management consulting firm or at an internal consulting/corporate strategy team, including 2+ years of experience motivating and leading teams

  • Ability to provide structure to ambiguous situations and apply analytical tools to develop solutions

  • Proven ability to lead multiple initiatives/projects to resolve diverse problems by solving challenges, obtaining consensus and implementing change

  • Comfort in challenging existing assumptions and operating models to drive innovation

  • Ability to interact with colleagues at all levels, including CB Operating Committee, in a peer-like way, and achieve goals without direct control over resources

  • Successful track record setting and achieving challenging goals and demonstrating entrepreneurial leadership

  • Outstanding ability to work well in cross-functional teams while coaching and developing other team members

  • Preferred experience with B2B, multi-channel sales strategy and cross-product partnerships
