JPMorgan Chase Software Engineering - Oracle in Houston, Texas

JP Morgan Chase is looking to hire a highly motivated experienced Oracle SQL expert to play a key part in the expansion. The successful candidate will work closely with the development team to create high volume transaction systems and act in database designing and reviewing of SQL/SP work from Java developers for a wide range of on-going/new projects on the platform.

Candidates should be Oracle certified and possess extensive knowledge and strong experience in Oracle database, PL/SQL programming skills, and ability to write clean, well-documented code. A good knowledge of high performance SQL tuning, large database design, shell scripting and batch programs, and Big Data solutions will be advantageous. The candidate should have exposure to many of these technologies and methodologies in a commercial environment.

The candidate should have a positive can-do attitude and have an ability to work well across a broader global team. The expectation from the candidate is act as the expert/consultant for developers in the team to provide guidance on the Oracle database side, including database design, SQL turning, and performance reviews. It is also expected for the successful candidate to oversee the databases in DEV, QA, UAT, and Production environments and to troubleshoot database related issues. The successful candidate should have excellent written and oral communication skills as they will be required to work with people across multiple global offices. An ability to work with tight deadlines is required for success in this role. The ideal candidate should also understand Portfolio Swaps. Knowledge of Prime Brokerage and Stock Lending is highly desirable although not essential.

You will be required to work directly with business partners in the Prime and Equities organization including Product Development, Front Office, Middle Office Operations, Finance, Legal and other JPMorgan functional areas to deliver competitive, efficient, and scalable product solutions.


  • Partner closely with the development teams to create a high volume transaction system;

  • Act as a consultant for Java Application Developers to design database structure and review SQL implementations.

  • High performance SQL tuning

  • Research and design database infrastructure;

  • Design, sizing, tuning, upgrades, issue resolution;

  • Overseeing database management system software and patches;

  • Develop and design Backup and Recovery procedures, and work with Oracle DBA team for implementation.

  • Review and design Disaster Recovery procedures;

  • Perform data pump and export/import;

  • Proactive monitoring of database incidents;

  • Work on solutions and resolve database related critical work items e.g. performance bottlenecks

  • Yearly DB infrastructure planning with LOB architect & GTI teams

  • Support volume/capacity testing from DB perspective

  • Educated to Bachelor’s degree level or equivalent

  • Extensive knowledge and strong experience in Oracle SQL, PL/SQL programming, and possess ability to write clean, well-documented code

  • Experience working within an Oracle Database environment or Oracle Certified looking to utilize your expertise in a technically challenging role.

  • Knowledge of how Oracle resources are being used during SQL executions

  • Proven aptitude to understanding technology and be able to develop that understanding into tangible commercial technical skills;

  • It is expected that the successful candidate will have worked on at least one major technically challenging global project.

  • Experience working in financial markets with knowledge of equity swaps / synthetic prime brokerage will be advantageous.

All internal moves will normally take place on the same grade and same salary. Salaries are reviewed annually in February. Exceptions to the rule regarding transfer on current salary may include a move between geographic locations.
